What Is PET Tape
PET Tape is a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape using PET as the backing material, often considered the pinnacle of industrial tape solutions. It consists of Backing Material, Adhesive System (acrylic, rubber, silicone, or hot-melt adhesive), and Optional Release Liner.
PET Tapes feature high-barrier properties, ultra-thin calibration, high tensile strength, and a high Young’s modulus. These features make PET tapes nearly irreplaceable in industries such as electrical insulation for electronic components, Precision Electronics Assembly, surface coating, and Plating Protection, compared to other film tapes, including PVC, PI, BOPP, and MOPP. PET tapes are also considered an upgraded version of BOPP tapes in logistics scenarios.

Why PET Tape Replaces PI in Most Industrial Applications
PET and PI are both high-temperature backing materials for tapes, but there are subtle differences between them. PET material can operate over a temperature range of 105℃ to 130℃ for a long-term lifecycle. The Premium Modified Grade version can withstand 150℃. However, when the operating temperature reaches extreme levels, the physical performance will start to decline. For PI tapes, although they can withstand temperatures up to 240℃, they cost 5-6 times as much as PET tapes. Overall, if you only need tapes that meet routine heat-resistance requirements, PET is the premier choice for reducing BOM costs.

Why PET Tape Outperforms PVC and BOPP in Industrial Systems
PET, PVC, and BOPP are regularly used as backing materials for daily logistics operations. Compared with PVC and BOPP, PET features a higher Young’s Modulus. This helps PET tapes offer great dimensional stability and creep resistance, which BOPP and PVC can not achieve.
PET is also a Halogen-Free material, which can generate less toxic gases if tapes are ignited. This makes PET tapes easier to achieve international certifications, such as RoHS, REACH, and IEC 61249-2-21.
Why PET Tape Is Critical in Industrial Systems
The core benefit of PET tapes in industrial manufacturing is reducing variability during the manufacturing process through the physical certainty of BOPET.
PET tapes exhibit excellent resistance to oxidative degradation at 130℃. Within this operating temperature range, PET tapes can avoid substrate embrittlement or shrinkage caused by thermal aging. This thermal stability directly determines the integrity of the masking interface, reducing the rework rate caused by substrate failure.
PET features a high dielectric strength (regular version: 20 μm thickness; Dielectric Strength: over 3kV/mm). Given PET’s low dielectric loss factor, it is essential to ensure that PET tapes do not overheat during application in high-frequency, high-voltage electric fields.
When it comes to EV battery modules and high-voltage transformers, we can meet stringent safety standards while optimizing volumetric efficiency by using a thinner insulation layer.
PET backing material has a tensile modulus of 4 GPa; this feature can prevent tape from creeping during continuous peeling or high-speed application. PET as a backing material will undergo only minimal elastic deformation under complex stresses. It is a precondition for access to high-precision automated assembly.
By controlling TD/MD shrinkage, PET tapes can limit displacement deviation to the micro level in a thermal-shock environment. Do not ignore this factor; dimensional stability is very important for laminating to Flexible Printed Circuits (FPC) . This can effectively help resist solder joint cracking and circuit distortion caused by substrate shrinkage. Eventually, PET tapes can extend the thermal cycling life of end products.
PET tapes feature great resistance to industrial gases, acid-base solutions, and other common solvents. Benefiting from PET’s highly crystalline molecular structure, PET tapes can protect their adhesive systems from solvent swelling. Ensuring the tape structure will not seep or lose adhesion during processes like electroplating and industrial cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions About PET Tapes
Egret Tape’s PET tapes with acrylic-based adhesive can be customized to withstand temperatures from -20℃ to 80℃ as working temperature. The short-term peak temperature can reach 120℃-130℃ for 30 minutes.
When choosing a silicone-based adhesive, the working temperature can be 150℃-180℃, and the short-term peak temperature can reach 200℃-220℃.
Yes, PET tapes are very suitable for electroplating masking. PET is chemically inert, which means PET Tapes can resist acid- and alkaline-based solvents. Egret Tape’s PET series also offers a no-residue adhesive, helping FPCs stay clean.
Yes, PET tapes are suitable for flexible printed circuits. PET is an electrical insulation base, through these properties, PET tapes are widely used for fixing, strengthening, and protection for FPCs during the reflow process.
PET tapes need to be stored in a warehouse at 20-25℃; higher temperatures will accelerate the oxidative degradation of the adhesive system and cause residue. While the temperature is below 5℃, the adhesive will later harden and lose its initial tack.
Meanwhile, avoid direct sunlight and keep the relative humidity between 40% and 60%. To avoid moisture-induced core deformation.
Sure, Egret Tape’s PET series can be customized for your specific applications. For physical performance, we can adjust the thickness of the backing material and the adhesive layer to enhance shear strength, holding power, and initial tack.
Our 15+ die-cutting machines ensure that tapes can be customized to the shapes you need, whether from rolls, sheets, or finished components.
