What Is Tape Coating
The tape coating process is a technology that ensures uniform coating on the substrate and is widely applied across industries, including Tape manufacturing, paper, printing, electronics, and others. The whole process shall comprise Substrate preparation, coating systems (such as doctor blade and roller coating), curing systems (ovens), and transmission & rewinding systems.
At the first step, adhesives or other functional materials (such as inks or coatings) are applied onto substrates (such as BOPP films, paper, fabrics, or metal foils). We usually set a precise thickness to meet performance requirements; the next regular. Adhesive Coating steps are drying, curing, rewinding, and other processes until a tape product is well-manufactured. All our tapes can be adjusted at any step to ensure your customized tape specifications.
The core of the whole process is how we control the substrates and coat thickness to meet different Scenarios(home or industrial, etc.), functions (sealing, bonding, stripping, etc), and features(waterproof, heat resistant, electrical isolation, etc.), and how we speed up drying production to improve production efficiency in case of shipment delay. This shall be no problem for the Egret Group, as we have automated product lines and advanced technology.

Why Is The Coating Process So Important For Tapes
The Coating Process determines the function, performance, and quality of the tapes. It can improve manufacturing efficiency and pass rate by precisely controlling thickness and coating uniformity, and it can also endow substrates with high-value-added attributes such as waterproofing, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, insulation, breathability, low-temperature resistance, etc.
With these added attributes, tapes can be specifically applied in industries such as Home appliances, Energy storage stations, 3C electronics, Construction & Infrastructure, Automotive, HVAC, coating industries, Low-Altitude Aviation, Painting & Surface Treatment, Rowing / Marine Sports Equipment, and Defense & Military Applications.
The coating process is not just putting material onto the substrates; instead, we precisely engineer materials (adhesives, inks, coatings) on substrates and make our tapes with ‘super power’.

Anilox Roller Coating
Principle: Anilox roller coating transfers coating liquid through a roller engraved with microscopic recesses. This process is divided into 3 steps: Filling the coating, removing the excess coating, and transferring the coating liquid. A micro-engraved roller with regularly patterned recesses on the surface, with depths ranging from a few micrometers to several tens of micrometers, is the core component of this manufacturing technology. The microstructure of the Roller always affects the apparent coating quality of the production.
Application Features: Often used for Low-viscosity liquids (such as solvent-based coatings and UV adhesives), the coating speed can reach 10-500m/min, and the coating weight depends on the geometry and cell volume of the micro-gravure roll.
Pros: High efficiency for coating, Suitable for high-speed manufacturing; Highly flexible gravure design that can be customized into dots and lines.
Cons: The gravure roll wears easily, Particulates tend to block the engraved cells, High replacement costs, The uniformity of the coating is greatly affected by the accuracy of the engraved roll.
Comma Bar Coating
Principle: Comma bar coating adjusts the gap between the blade and the substrate to control coating thickness, and it is usually paired with a backing roller. When it starts coating, adhesion, or other special coating liquid in the trough contacts the substrate surface, forming a wet film. Then the comma blade, which is usually made of a high-hardness alloy, scrapes off excess liquid, maintaining a wet film by adjusting the gap with the substrate (usually 10–500 μm).
Application Features: Often used for Medium-viscosity liquids (such as paints and adhesives), the coating speed can range from 1 to 50m/min, and the thickness can be customized from 10 to 500 μm by adjusting the Blade-substrate gap or applied pressure.
Pros: Simple structure, low equipment cost, easy to maintain, suitable for small-batch, multi-variety production.
Cons: Sensitive to liquid viscosity, needs a lower coating speed to avoid Non-uniform coating thickness, Bubbles or voids, Incomplete coating / stringing, Coater instability or vibration, Edge build-up (beading), Surface defects or striations

Gravure Roll Coating
Principle: The Gravure Roll will be contacted and fully coated with adhesives, then the doctor blade scrapes off excess coating from the surface, leaving a precise amount in the cells. The coating in the engraved cells will be transferred onto the substrate, forming a liquid film in the process.
| Key Control | Function |
| Cell Depth | Set the coating thickness |
| Doctor Blade Pressure | Manage residual material |
| Coating Viscosity | Cell Filling Matching |
Application Features:
| Precision | Thickness tolerance ±1%-3%, suitable for micron-level precision coating (e.g., lithium battery electrode sheets) |
| Material | High-viscosity (1,000-100,000 mPa・s) slurries/coatings, compatible with high solid content systems (e.g., electrode active materials) |
| Function | 1. Enables uniform coating or patterned coating (cavities distributed as designed); 2. Supports substrates such as films, metal foils, and paper |
Pros: High precision, High uniformity, Suitable for high-viscosity & high-solid-content materials, Patterned coating supported.
Cons: The Gravure roll needs to be customized at a high cost, can only be applied in one procust series except by changing the gravure roll, and the doctor blade demands regular maintenance.
Slot Die Coating
Principle: Slot die coating is a high-precision, non-contact coating technology in which the coating liquid is uniformly applied to substrates, creating a coating layer with a customizable thickness. The slot die coater contains a precision-machined slot with a width ranging from tens of micrometers to several millimeters. This coater usually uses a flow meter and a thickness sensor as its control system. Then our coating material can be transferred to the slot die coater and formed.
Application Features: Slot Die Coating is mostly used for High-viscosity liquids (such as electrode slurry and optical adhesive). It can offer high-precision control: at any point on the same coated substrate, the coating thickness deviation will be within ±1%. The speed can reach 100m/min and is capable of multi-layer coating (such as double-sided coating of lithium-ion battery cathodes and anodes).
Pros: High-precision process(thickness deviation within ±1% ), Non-Contacting coating process(Does no damage to substrates), Capable of multi-layer co-extrusion, Adapted to speed range 0.1-100m/min.
Cons: High-cost machine, high die machining complexity, and high risk of clogging. High-viscosity liquids also require high-pressure pumps, which increase energy consumption; the operation also requires experienced staff.

During the coating process, if there are any signs of uneven coating, adjust the coating head speed and viscosity.
Reducing viscosity and speeding up the coating process will help solve the air bubbles. You can also use defoamer to help reduce them.
Optimizing the doctor blade angle or employing edge control techniques to minimize buildup and ensure clean edges.
The drying time can be extended, or the drying temperature increased to ensure the coating is fully cured.
Conclusion
With ever-increasing demand for tapes, coating technology has become a core competence for tape manufacturers entering the high-end market, highlighting differentiated competition among adhesive tape manufacturers.
Egret Group will leverage 30 years of tape manufacturing experience, following the trends of market changes.
