What Is Water-Based Acrylic Adhesive?
Water-based acrylic adhesive is an eco-friendly polymer material that utilizes water as the dispersion medium. It is a copolymer synthesized through emulsion polymerization of various acrylic monomers, such as butyl acrylate (BA), methyl acrylate (MA), and acrylic acid (AA).
This molecular backbone consists entirely of saturated carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds. Thanks to the stability of the carbon-carbon single bond, this grants water-based acrylic adhesives exceptional UV resistance and aging properties. Making water-based acrylic adhesive less prone to yellowing or performance degradation over long-term use. By adjusting polar groups and flexible groups attached to the main chain, the adhesive can provide different levels of tack and compatibility with different surfaces.

Water-based acrylic adhesive‘s polymer molecules do not dissolve in organic solvents; instead, they are suspended in water as microscopic emulsion particles. Egret Group will adjust the coalescing agent ratio and drying process parameters during the curing process, resulting in fast water volatilization. As the water evaporates, these microscopic particles coalesce to form a continuous, high-strength adhesive film. This means that tapes with water-based acrylic adhesives will produce fewer VOCs during daily use.

Insights of Water-based Acrylic Adhesive
Considering all these factors, the water-based acrylic adhesive is both cost-effective and capable of adhering to a wide range of substrates, and can be engineered to improve compatibility with selected low-surface-energy (LSE) materials. The Green Ticket
Accompanied by increasingly higher standards of VOCs, water-based acrylic adhesives are more attractive to customers in Europe and North America. Tapes with this kind of adhesive are easier to enter markets with high demand for sustainable requirements, such as the Home Appliance, Electronic, and Construction sectors.

Long-term Reliability For Industrial Applications
Industrial applications often require tapes that are exposed to harsh environments for years, and the saturated carbon-carbon single bonds in water-based acrylic adhesives provide them with extraordinary resistance to oxidation and UV radiation.
This makes water-based acrylic adhesive tapes suitable for industrial sealing, labeling, and bonding without yellowing, embrittlement, and debonding. This stability can reduce the maintenance & repair (M&R) expenses and warranty claims due to the adhesive aging.
The Cost-Effective Solution For Premium-Price Requirements
Water-based acrylic adhesive has great advantages in raw material cost and process safety. By fine-tuning the cross-links, the Egret Group can apply tapes in specific scenarios, such as internal component mounting and temporary protection during shipping.

Precision Customization
Through adjusting the monomer ratios or coalescing agents, Egret Group can maintain the tack and holding power of our water-based acrylic adhesive tapes. We also provide tailored solutions for various industries, such as optimizing the coalescence process to offer clean removal, which is crucial for advanced electronics manufacturing.
For full-scenario requirements, water-based acrylic adhesive can be combined with various backing materials, including PET, Aluminum Foil, Foam, Paper, and Washi Paper, to serve multiple functions such as damping, thermal conductivity, masking, and bonding.
Water-Based Acrylic Adhesive vs Other Common Adhesive Systems
In industrial tape applications, adhesive selection is always driven by the application.
Different adhesive systems are developed to address specific performance requirements, regulatory constraints, and cost considerations.
The comparison below provides a technical reference to help engineers understand the position of water-based acrylic adhesives relative to other commonly used adhesive systems.

Water-based acrylic adhesives and solvent-based acrylic adhesives share a similar acrylic polymer backbone. However, the acrylic polymer is dispersed in water and dissolved in solvents, which is the core difference between water-based and solvent-based adhesives.
When using water as a medium, the adhesive typically exhibits more long-term stability. Although it lacks initial tack compared with solvent-based acrylic adhesive, after 24 hours of bonding, the bond strength typically reaches an optimal level.
Water-based acrylic adhesive typically offers compliance with low-VOC standards for indoor air quality, contributing to LEED and green building, making it more suitable for daily use. When you need adhesive tapes in environments ranging from -20 °C to 100 °C, you require colorless and odorless products suitable for common industries or the home appliance sector. The water-based adhesive tape may be a good choice. However, solvent-based acrylics are still irreplaceable when dealing with oily surfaces or working in cold conditions.
Water-based acrylic adhesive, compared with rubber-based adhesive, is the choice between long-term stability and instant bonding.
Depending on the pressure-sensitive properties, the bonding strength of the water-based acrylic adhesive can increase with dwell time. However, the rubber-based adhesive featuring low surface tension and exceptional fluidity flows like a liquid, rapidly wetting out and filling the microscopic irregularities of the substrate surface. So that the rubber-based adhesive can offer well-performed initial tack, suitable for hard-to-bond Low Surface Energy (LSE) substrates such as PE and PP.
When it comes to clean removal, the water-based acrylic adhesive holds an overwhelming advantage. Because its holding power (cohesive strength) remains stable over time, while rubber-based tapes suffer a significant drop in cohesion due to aging. According to this specification, water-based acrylic adhesive tapes are widely used for applications like high-durability labeling and electronic screen protection. While rubber-based adhesive tapes are more suitable for carton sealing and floor masking (Removal immediately upon completion of work), they are also highly suitable for highly non-polar substrates and instant bonding.
Water-based acrylic adhesive typically operates within a temperature range of -20 °C to 100 °C. When the temperature reaches 150℃, its physical performance will start to deteriorate. Meanwhile, due to the Si-O-Si structure in silicone-based adhesives, they will not carbonize, blacken, or lose their tack during 260℃ reflow soldering or high-temperature powder coating processes.
Water-based acrylic adhesive exhibits excellent adhesion to polar substrates such as metals and PET, however, when bonding to non-polar plastics (such as PE and PP), it typically requires the addition of specific tackifiers or surface corona treatment. However, the silicone-based adhesive is the only adhesive system suitable for extreme temperature environments, such as -60 °C or 260 °C.
For applications under 100℃, water-based acrylic adhesive has great advantages in cost-effectiveness, as it offers more environmental endorsement. When it comes to high-temperature electronics processing or bonding of anti-stick/release materials, silicone-based adhesives will be the only option, although they are expensive.
Water-based acrylic adhesive tapes, compared to hot melt adhesive tapes, offer a trade-off between long-term weather resistance and industrial production efficiency. Water-based and other common adhesive systems require oven drying to remove moisture; however, the Egret Group has optimized this process through a gradient temperature-controlled film formation technology, achieving a denser and more stable adhesive structure. However, hot melt adhesive still offers better manufacturing efficiency for automated production lines, as it contains no water or solvents, and the adhesive sets from a molten state to a solid in just seconds.
Water-based acrylic adhesive exhibits excellent weather resistance, allowing the adhesive system to remain transparent and adherent even under prolonged outdoor exposure. While hot melt adhesive features thermoplastic properties, it will occur that the adhesive softens, leading to a sharp decline in peel strength and holding power. Additionally, the resin tackifiers in the adhesive also start yellowing over time.
- Long-term outdoor exposure,
- High humidity and high water immersion environment,
- High temperature,
- high structural strength requirements
